Electronic Waste |
Every day we use numerous electrical and electronic appliances for different purposes. The utility of appliances in our daily is enormous. But like all other things, after using for a long time, the power and capacity of these appliances decreases and at one point of time these machineries just stop working. We then remove those unwanted things from our house and buy new items. Every day billions of people across the world are removing unwanted electrical and electronic items from their houses because these are of no use now. Within a few moments, appliances that have been an important part of our life become waste products that are known as electronic waste or e-waste.
Electronic waste or e-waste refers to all unwanted electronic and electrical appliances and their broken parts. Computer monitors, music systems, mobile phones, remote controls, air conditioning machines are some of the biggest examples of electronic waste. Apart from damaged and dead appliances, items that are in new condition but are irreparable are also considered as electronic waste. According to directive issued by WEEE, electronic waste include damaged large household appliances, small household items like vacuum cleaners and toasters, personal computers, printing machines, fax machines and mobile phones, entertainment electronics like television, CD players, lighting equipments like fluorescent tubes and bulbs, e-tools like drilling machines and electric lawnmowers, leisure equipments like electronic toys, medical appliances, surveillance equipments and ticket issuing machines.

We throw our damaged and irreparable electronic and electrical appliances in the garbage when they are of no use, but electronic waste is a very important matter of concern for WEEE because some of the electronic waste are toxic and are not biodegradable and thus create air pollution. In the year 1991, electronic waste recycling system was introduced for the first time in Switzerland and at that time mainly damaged refrigerators were collected from garbages for recycling.
