VCR is the abbreviation for video cassette recorders. Before the invention of shining compact discs or CDs and DVDs, video cassettes and video cassette recorders or VCRs were an important source of entertainment and amusement for people. VCRs was the first machine that made watching movies sitting in rooms possible for people. Though today the market of VCR has gone down for the dominance of CD and DVD players, VCR is one of the most popular household electrical appliances.
Video cassette recorder or VCR is a compact machine which is capable of recording programs telecasted in television or scenes shot by movie cameras in a video cassette that can be played back later. The operation of VCR is very simple. You just need to put a removable video cassette containing electronic magnetic tape inside the player for watching movies or recorded programs in television sets. A VCR is generally equipped with own tuner and program tuner.

When it was first launched in market, the demand for VCR was huge. One of the main reason behind the popularity of VCR was its simple operation. Besides, VCR is also a very light weighed machine and is easy to carry from one place to another. There was a time when large number of electrical appliances manufacturing companies used to produce wide range of VCRs for people. Products manufactured by Sony, Philips and Avco Cetrivision were the most popular among all VCRs available in the markets.
Speaking about Video cassette recorder or VCR it must be mentioned here that the history of video cassette recorder dates back to the mid 20th century. Ampex was the first company to launch commercial videotape recording machine in the market in the year 1956. Named as Ampex VRX-1000, the VCR manufactured by Ampex had 2” Quadruplex format and used to play two-inch tape. But as the price of the machine was not affordable for general people, the first commercial VCR was sold to television channels. Later, in the year 1971 Sony became the first company to sell commercial VCR in the market.
