History of the washing machines is very interesting and one of the most unique among all electronic appliances. Speaking about history of the washing machines it has to be mentioned here that before the invention of this unique device, people used to wash their clothes by hands and long before that the only option of removing dirt from clothes was to strike those on solid rocks. James King is one of the most important names in the history of the washing machines. In the year 1851 he patented the first washing machine to use a drum. Drum is a part of modern washing machines but at that time it was only a hand-powered machine. Before that in the year 1797, the earliest washing machine was invented which consisted a scrub board.
Speaking about history of the washing machines, one cannot forget to mention about the contributions made by Hamilton Smith and William Blackstone. In the year 1858, Hamilton Smith invented the rotary washing machine and in the year 1874, William Blackstone of Indiana built a machine which was capable of washing away dirt from clothes. Later in the year 1908, Hurley Machine Company of Chicago Illinois introduced The Thor washing machine which was invented by Alva J Fisher. The Thor too consisted a drum-type container with a galvanized tub and a motor run by electricity.
