Iron |
Iron is one of the home appliances without which a home is incomplete. Iron, since its inception has been helping people in removing wrinkles and creases from washed clothes. For a prim and proper appearance, you need neat clothes and without an iron that is impossible. So, ironing is closely linked with looks and appearances of people.
Iron has a long and strong history. In first century B.C in China metal pans were filled with charcoal were used to smooth fabric. Solid irons were introduced during the 17th century. These irons were made of thick slabs of iron and had handles. One of a later design is a box iron, which was filled with hot charcoals. This iron needed periodical aeration. In India in the state of Kerala, burning coconut shells were used instead of coal to heat the iron. Another type of iron in use was a cluster of solid irons, which was heated from one source, creating a chain of hot irons. During the 20th century fuel irons were used. Fuels like gasoline, carbide gas, natural gas, whale oil, alcohol and kerosene were used in these irons.

The most popular is the electric iron, which is heated from electric current using resistive heating. The sole plate or the hot plate is made of stainless steel or aluminum. A thermostat controls the heating element, which maintains the specified temperature.
