From fashion statement of the elite to a necessity of daily life, the journey of mobile phone has been quick. This electronic device traversed a long path of technical supremacy and today boasts of some real bedazzling features. Today a person cannot live without mobile phones. This appliance has become part and parcel of daily life of man.
Mobile phones are portable electronic devices used for mobile connection. Apart from mobile communication a mobile phone offers a range of features like email, Internet surfing through packet switching, SMS that is sending and receiving of text messages, MMS for multimedia message service for videos and photos and of course voice function, the basic function of a telephone.
Mobile phones have a long history. In 1908 Patent Number 887357, one U.S patent was issued to Nathan B. Stubblefield and he applied this patent to “cave radio” telephones. In 1947 the Bell Labs engineers introduced cells for base stations of mobile phones. Zero generation of mobile phones was introduced in 1945. Bell Labs invented a “call-hand-off” feature allowing cell phone users to travel through many cells all through the same conversation. However, the credit of inventing the first handheld and practical mobile phone for use in a non-vehicle setting goes to Motorola. NTT launched the first commercial network of cellular phones in 1979 in Japan.

There are several telephone manufacturers vying to capture the market of cellular phones with their innovative and modern products. The big names are available all over the world while some companies serve local markets only. Some of the top mobile phone manufacturers are LG, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Nokia. Some of the other manufacturers of mobile phones are Verizon, Toshiba, SK Teletech, Sierra Wireless, Siemens, Sharp, Sanyo, Samsung, Philips, Panasonic, Neonode, Mitsubishi, Benefon, Apple Inc. and others.
A mobile phone today is an inseparable part of life.
