In the present times, a refrigerator has become so much part and parcel of daily life, it is difficult to imagine a household without a nice refrigerator standing at one side of the kitchen. A refrigerator is a home appliance, which is used to store food to prevent them deteriorating from ambient temperatures. There is a thermally insulated compartment in a fridge and the mechanism of a refrigerator transfer heat from within to the external environment. Apart from prevention of spoilage of food a refrigerator prevents deterioration from bacterial growth. The temperatures maintained by refrigerators are a few degrees more than the freezing point of water.

Prior to the invention of refrigerators, icehouses provided cool storage all through the year. Persia was famous for building such structures. William Cullen first demonstrated artificial refrigeration in 1748 at the University of Glasgow. The idea of an refrigerating machine for home is of Marcel Audiffren. American Audiffren Refrigerating Machine Company purchased his U.S patents issued in the years 1895 and 1908. The Guradian unit built by General Electronics is the predecessor to refrigerators. The introduction of freezer units in homes in USA occurred in 1940 and storing food became necessity from luxury.
