Microwave Ovens or microwave is one of the kitchen appliances that is quite popular for domestic usage. The appliance is generally used in homes and restaurants more for faster cooking and time efficiency than for quality cooking. Microwave ovens offer limited usefulness. Thus professional chefs do not find it much of help. However, it can not be denied that food preparation has been revolutionized by microwave ovens. It became a common household product since 1970s.
This well known cooking appliance, Microwave oven, was invented by an engineer named Dr. Percy Spencer at Raytheon Corporation. The microwaves which are used to cook food have a frequency of about 2.45 Gigahertz or 2450 Megahertz. The food items easily absorb the microwaves and thus gets heated up. However, metals deflect the microwaves back. The machine allows the user to heat food at several power levels.

Microwave ovens can be classified into two types :
Conventional microwave
Convection microwave.
Convection microwave ovens are more energy efficient than conventional ovens because the heat generated is continuously circulated around the food item. It thus reduces the time required for cooking. Convection microwave reduces 20 % energy usage. It is more expensive than a conventional microwave oven. However, prices have considerably reduced over the past few years.
Microwave ovens can be classified into three types according to size :
Large capacity Microwaves – These microwaves are big in size. It is used for cooking meals, roasting meat etc.
Medium capacity Microwave – These microwave ovens allow to cook small pieces of meat, vegetables etc.
Compact Microwave – Compact microwave are small in size. These portable microwaves are the most popular and are mainly used for reheating food items and making popcorns.
Some popular microwave manufacturing companies are Samsung, LG, Godrej, Bajaj, Panasonic, Onida etc. Some brands offer 'child lock' facility to forbid children from accidentally operating the appliance.
