White Goods

Appliances refer to all those tools, machineries, devices that we use in our daily life. All things that have got application and utility are termed as appliances. We use various types of appliances. While some are used for cooking and preserving foods, some are used for washing and cleaning. Besides, there are several appliances that provide us entertainment and amusement. Some of the appliances that we use are small in size and can be easily carried from one place to another. But some appliances are large, heavy and difficult to move. Appliances have been broadly been categorized into two classes according to their sizes. Small and movable items fall under the category of brown goods and large and heavy machineries and devices are termed as white goods.

In places, where British English is spoken, white goods refer to large machines that are used for housekeeping purposes like cooking, preservation of foods and cleaning. Apart from that, appliance that are mainly operated by electricity or natural gas are considered as white goods. According to British English speaking people, an appliance run by watermill is also a member of the group of white goods.
